Penn State sophomore Quentin Wright went 1-2 and junior Cameron Wade went 0-2 during the challenge tournament at Saturday’s World Team Freestyle Wrestling Trials. Competing at 84 kilograms (185 pounds), Wright lost his opening bout to two-time NCAA champion Chris Pendleton 4-1 and was pinned 56 second in the second period before pinning Brandon Sinnott in the consolation bracket. Wright, who won last month’s University Team Trials, ended the tournament with a 4-0, 1-3, 4-0 loss to Kirk Smith. Competing at 120 kilograms (264.5 pounds), Wade lost to Blake Gillis 0-1, 3-1, 4-0 and former NCAA champion Tommy Rowlands 2-0, 2-0. Wade and Wright qualified for the team trials by finishing sixth at this spring U.S. Open in Cleveland. They were among six wrestlers representing the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club.

Les Sigman captured the 120 kilogram for the NLWC by defeating Tervel Dlagnev 2-0 in their best-of-three championship series. The victory qualifies Sigman, who has been training in State College since last year, for September’s world championships in Moscow. Jake Varner, Aaron Anspach and Teyon Ware also represented the NLWC. Varner won the 96- kilogram challenge series before losing to J.D. Bergman in Friday’s championship final. Anspach went 2-2 and finished fourth at 120 kilograms while Ware went 1-2 at 66 kilograms. Former Penn State and Philipsburg-Osceola wrestler James Yonushonis, who trains in Columbus, Ohio, went 0-2 at 84 kilograms. Former Bald Eagle Area wrestler Justin Millard went 2-2 and finished fourth at 96 kilograms in the Greco-Roman division. Sigman and Bergman will be joined on the United States freestyle by Obe Blanc (55 kilograms), Mike Zaddick (60 kg), Brent Metcalf (66 kg), Travis Paulson (74 kg) and Jake Herbert (84 kg).
